In an attempt to make the team colour charts more useful to the casual collector, this is the first of a series of appendices that will allow site visitors to find their favourite team, and all the numbers associated with it. The teams are in alphabetical order, and include any non-league, or disbanded clubs that have appeared in a Subbuteo catalogue.
A few things need to be mentioned before you plough into the list. All these numbers are taken from catalogues I own. So any errors could be mine, or they could be wrong in the catalogues. As I don't have every catalogue ever produced, I won't have caught every change among the lower division sides. These smaller clubs don't tend to have numbers of their own, especially after 1981, so just use the closest match from kits designed for other sides (including international ones). These clubs still seem to swap around a great deal, but the changes are often very minor (i.e. trim or sock colour). A prize should be awarded to Scarborough, who use a different number in seven consecutive catalogues in the 1990s (1990-96).
I have tried to highlight kits that were produced exclusively for one club - i.e. No167 is solely a Rochdale kit. These are the numbers in bold type. Some of these numbers were later used by different clubs, but if there was only one club using it at launch, then I've highlighted that club.
The table is roughly divided into time periods, because this makes the information easier to digest. It may also help if you are collecting a certain era, or figure type. I've put the kits in date order, and if a team returns to a number it used in the past, I have included that number each time they return to it. In the late 1990s we see many clubs returning to the numbers they started with in the 1960s.
The "Premier" column refers to the new numbering system given to Hasbro teams for the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. Amongst the English teams, only Premiership teams get these new numbers.
If you've looked at the team lists already, you'll realise that after 1992 clubs retain the same number even if the kit colours change. At present, this chart does not indicate numbers with more than one kit.
Please note that a blank space in the list can mean two different things. In home kit rows, if a column is blank it means the team are still using the kit from the previous column. If the team wasn't available in that era then this is shown with a "----". For away kits, if there isn't a number, there isn't a kit. In the classic 1981 catalogue, there is an attempt to tie up as many clubs as possible to away kits, although again, most of these kits were designed as other clubs home kits.
