Subbuteo Tribute Website.

The Team Colours Project.

Classic Heavyweight 1967-1980.

References 201 - 300.

These numbers all come from the big team expansion of 1978-79, although of course being Subbuteo it isn't quite as straightforward as that. The Italian, NASL, and South American teams debut in the Italian range of 1976, whilst some of the English sides appear in named boxes (and indeed as 191-195) prior to 1978 but without catalogue appearances. See the Italian Production page for further details. Other countries welcomed to the Subbuteo fold here include Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Portugal.

This rapid expansion of teams coincided with the introduction of the zombie figure, and the possibility of machine printed and assembled teams may have been the catalyst for this large increase in sides. Mind you, the rugby teams were also expanded in this era, so perhaps SSG just envisioned that the common teams would be machine printed initially, thus freeing up the painters for the more unusual stuff.

Most of the pictures on this page come from Italian catalogues of the early 1980s (these are the pictures with the brown backgrounds). Luckily, because the Italians took a dislike to the zombie, they do seem to have painted the majority of teams onto the heavyweight figure. However, the next figure, the lightweight, is introduced in 1980-81, so there are three different figures that these teams can be painted onto. Finding the right team in the right figure can be a difficult task....

If you want to see more from the Italian catalogues, then check out Stefano Montecchiesi's website as he illustrates both lightweights and heavyweights from this source.

July 2020: A further Italian catalogue has come to light allowing me to add their pictures for 212, 220 and 237. All the "real" teams are now illustrated on other Subbuteo websites, usually with lovely big pictures (see the links page above for details). I've borrowed the odd picture from these so that all the teams here are properly illustrated with a heavyweight figure. However, I've decided to stick with the slightly blurred Italian catalogue pictures in the main for the rarer sides. Partly because I am concerned about repaints, but I do feel that the catalogue show the teams as originally intended - useful when things like hair/boot colours and trim vary on teams within the community.

Team Colours.

  1. Stockport County 1978-79. Torquay and Hasselt (Belgium) 1980. (1986)
    • There seem to be two versions of this Stockport county team, matching variations worn by the side themselves
    • The standard catalogue version has blue stripes on the arms, and blue sock trim (which is sometimes missing). This exists into the l/w era.
    • There is a second version with yellow and blue arm trim. This does not have the sock trim (and was worn 1976-77 by Stockport).
    • Unless the yellow trim is Torquay who were placed on this kit in 1980 (although they had a more accurate version sitting empty at 307)
  2. Southend United. 1978-80 (1981)
  3. Watford. 1978-80 (1980)

    • However, it has also been seen (in both h/w and zombie) in a full blue shirt with the white trim painted on.

    • However, versions in the community (in both h/w and l/w) have black hair and boots.
  5. Viking (Norway), Chesterfield, Oldham Athletic, and St Johnstone. All 1978-80 Siracusa (Italy) 1980 only (1986)
    • The Italian catalogue of 1992 still illustrates this team with a heavyweight player
  6. Rosenborg (Norway) 1978 only. Swansea City, and Wolverhampton Wanderers 2nd 1978-80 (1981)

  10. Lens (France) 1978-80 (1991)

The UK catalogue has the diagonal going the other way.

  1. Paris Saint-Germain (France). 1978-80 (1980)
  2. Troyes (France) 1978-80 Cowdenbeath 1979-80. (1983)

  9. San Jose Earthquakes (NASL) 1978-80 (1983)
    • Was also Portsmouth 2nd 1980-81 and Wormatia Worms (WG) in 1981.
  10. Hartford Bicentennials (NASL) 1978-80 (1981)
    • The Italian catalogues always have the stripes on the opposite diagonal to the UK ones.
    • This team was (correctly) Washington Diplomats in the 1976 Italian range, but somehow the name was mixed up with 268.
    • The  "Italian" diagonal version was also worn as an away kit by Manchester City in the early 1970s and was possibly sold "named box" at that time.

261 - 270 All NASL teams (Unless otherwise stated)

  1. New York Cosmos 1978-80 (1981)
  2. Boston Minutemen 1978-80 (1981)
  3. Minnesota Minutemen. Also Shrewsbury Town (England) 1978-80 (1981)
  4. Toronto Metros 1978-80 (1981)
  5. Philadelphia Atoms 1978-80 (1981)
  6. Tampa Bay Rowdies 1978-80 (1981)
  7. Vancouver Whitecaps 1978-80 (1981)
  8. Washington Diplomats 1978-80 (1983)
    • This kit was actually Hartford Bicentennials in the 1976 Italian range, but was mixed up with 260 when added to the British catalogues.
    • Mind you, the NASL jerseys website suggests Hartford wore white and red, not blue.
    • Was also sold as Gillingham 2nd in 1980.
  9. Portland Timber 1978-80 (1981)
    • The zombie catalogues show this team without shorts trim.
  10. Los Angeles Aztecs. Also Bradford City (England) 1978-80 (1982)

272-280 Teams from Portugal

  1. USA 1978-80 (1990) .
  2. Academica 1978-80 (1986, then 1990-95)
  3. Boavista 1978-80 (1986, then 1990-96)
  4. CUF 1978-80 (1981)
    • This was in the English catalogue as a reference 45 without the white sock trim. The Italian illustration above looks like it has the trim. At any rate, producing a tiny sock variation on an already fairly minor side does seem a bit barmy. Which may explain the short life of this figure.
    • There is a suggestion that this was painted in a darker green - as used on 62 or 174 (and maybe 242). See teams on the other h/w sites for examples.
  5. Atletico 1978-80 (1986)
  6. Tomar 1978-80 (1981)
  7. Sporting Lisbon 1978-80 (1996)
  8. Porto (was also Stockport County in 1980) 1978-80 (1996)

  10. Olhanense 1978-80 (1981)

  4. Elfsborg 1978-80 (1985)
  5. Oster 1978-80 (1985)
  6. Orgryte. (Also York City 1979-80). 1978-80 (1996)
    • The Italian catalogue of 1992 still illustrates this team with a heavyweight player
  7. Landskrona. Also Rabat (Malta), VPS (Finland) 1978-80 (1996)
  8. Djurgarden 1978-80 (1983)
  9. Kalmar. Also Barnsley (England) 1978-80 (1986)
  10. Orebro 1978-80 (1983)
    • This team causes some confusion with reference 154, which should have very dark blue shorts. Trouble is, sometimes 154 was issued in black. By the time 290 arrives in 1978, 154 has gained some extra trim (and in Italy it gets even more trim than in the UK catalogues).
    • This kit was also Liverpool 2nd in 1978.

  1. Sundsvall (Sweden) 1978-80 (1981)
  2. Halmstad (Sweden) 1978-80 (1981)
    • Okay, so it looks a slightly different tone of blue to reference 5, but this is another added team which was hardly necessary, and rather short lived.
  3. Norrkoping (Sweden) 1978-80 (1992)
  4. Newell's Old Boys (Argentina) 1978-80 (1986)
  5. Boca Juniors (Argentina) 1978-80 (1986)
  6. Rosario Central (Argentina) 1978-80 (1986)
    • The Italian catalogue of 1992 still illustrates this team with a heavyweight player.
  7. Independiente (Argentina) 1978-80 (1986)
  8. San Lorenzo (Argentina) 1978-80 (1986)
  9. Fluminense (Brazil) 1978-80 (1986)
  10. Cruzeiro (Brazil) 1978-80 (1986)
