The Team Colours Project.

Appendix : P100-66000 Squad Boxes.

Subbuteo Sports Games always liked to follow football trends, and so in the 1980s as the number of substitutes increased, and international football embraced squad numbers, so Subbuteo followed along. The simple C129 1-11 number transfer sheet became C206 with "FIFA approved numbers" according to the Italian catalogue. Meanwhile, the Subbuteo squad was born - fourteen outfield players and two goalkeepers. The usual C100 box design was extended to a square shape to accommodate the extra figures. The format was used in the European Edition of 1983-84, and the World Cup Edition for 1986, as well as restricted team ranges.

The advantage for Subbuteo players was cover for breakages - keepers were fragile, and outfield players were frequently knelt on! Despite this, the bulky and expensive sets did not make much of an impression. It is debateable whether the original P100 squad made it out of Italy, and the 66000 World Cup squads were only used in 1986 and 1990, and both in the same box, suggesting a using up of stock.....

Note that a set of the C206/61206 squad number transfers were supplied with all these teams.

P100 International Squad.

This box remains a bit of a mystery to me. The P100 code ties in to the original C100 team reference, of course. As that system of numbering was dropped for the 1984 catalogue,  this puts the introduction of this box before then, and it clearly matches the monochrome logo and horizontal boxes of that period. This was when I was originally playing the game, but I do not recall seeing these boxes, and I have never seen one among second-hand teams in the UK.

I cannot find this reference in the UK catalogues/posters of the period, but I have seen them in two Italian catalogues - 1982-83 (second Edition), and 1985-86, and they still appear as P100-66000 in Parodi's "Italia 90" price list. The 1982-83 catalogue is the Italian equivalent to the UK's 1983 poster, with team numbers stopping at 379 (plus 501-509 and the NASL). It is also the catalogue which celebrates Italy winning the 1982 world cup, so is later in date than the 1982 World Cup range. The squad based "European Edition" designed for the 1984 European Championships also debuts in this catalogue.

Luckily, all these catalogues provide a list of available teams. These are not identical. 1985-86 sees new teams added - the three teams promoted to Serie A in 1984-85 (Atalanta, Como, and Cremonese) plus Anderlecht, whilst other clubs had been updated to new references. For ease of use, I have listed the clubs in reference number order below, and then split them into club and national sides alphabetically. This is so that I can compare the International teams with the World Cup squads, but also to keep the tables at a sensible size.

Here are the reference numbers for the catalogued P100 teams, seen across 1982-83, 1985-86 and 1990. As the kits do update, it is likely that other versions exist in catalogues I have yet to see. However, this is a good starting point (and already a big list).

ref 1 (Cologne), 5 (Lazio), 8 (PAOK), 9 (PSV. Athletic Bilbao), 10 (Austria), 18 (East Germany), 19 (Catania), 21 (Real Madrid), 25 (Celtic), 39 (Poland), 48 (Spain), 55 (Anderlecht), 57 (Milan), 58 (Inter, Atalanta), 68 (Chile), 72 (Genoa), 85 (Feyenoord), 90 (Como), 93 (Catanzaro, Roma), 95 (Bologna), 98 (Palermo), 99 (Torino), 133 (Stuttgart), 141 (Nancy), 142 (Nantes), 143 (Bastia), 148 (Monaco), 149 (Yugoslavia), 151 (Belgium), 155 (El Salvador), 157 (Panathinakos), 161 (USSR), 162 (Sweden), 165 (Santos), 221 (Borussia M'Gladbach), 231 (Czechoslovakia), 246 (Juventus), 281 (Hungary), 295 (Boca Juniors), 301 (Penerol), 316 (Sochaux), 318 (Scotland), 320 Avellino, 329 (England), 346 (St Etienne), 347 (Lyon), 372 (Manchester Utd), 381 (Sweden), 393 (Northern Ireland, Avellino), 397 (Uruguay), 398 (Sampdoria), 402 (Algeria), 403 (Cameroon), 404 (Kuwait), 405 (Honduras), 410 (Brazil), 412 (Poland, Hamburg) 415 (Italy), 416 (Holland), 422 (Bordeaux), 424 (Atletico Madrid), 433 Spain, 443 (Italy away), 444 (Belgium), 445 (West Germany), 448 (Liverpool), 452 (Ajax), 455 (Peru), 457 (Argentina), 461 (France), 470 (Udinese), 472 (Barcelona), 476 ("new" Roma), 484 (Aston Villa), 486 (Arsenal), 490 (Fiorentina), 495 (Napoli), 501 (Cremonese), 502 (Roma 2nd), 507 (Flamengo), 523 (Anderlecht), 531 (Portugal), 536 (Paris Saint Germain), 543 (New York Cosmos) and 569 (England), 579 (Juventus, Udinese), 621 (Lazio), 663 (Liverpool), 683 (Arsenal), 684 (Manchester Utd), 690 (Verona), 691 (Real Madrid), 692 (Como)

Not surprisingly for an Italian catalogue list, the Italian league dominates the club teams. There is a good French representation, but beyond that is only a smattering of famous clubs from around Europe and South America.

The 1985-86 catalogue also highlights the national sides that have qualified for the 1986 World Cup, and the catalogue pictures suggest an external tri-colour loop was added to the corner of the box to advertise the world cup sides. The World Cup Squad box shown below has this diagonal colours printed on the boxes. The team references for the P100 international teams do not always tie up to those in the later 66000 range - i.e. Hungary is advertised as ref 281 in P100, whereas it was 635 in the 1986 World Cup series.

Below are the Club sides in alphabetical order.

66000 World Cup Squad.

The 66000 teams use the same interior as the P100, but with the mid 1980s numbering system and more colourful boxes. For this range, Subbuteo narrowed things down to just the World Cup teams, well in theory. The teams were introduced before the full world cup line up for 1986 was known, so the catalogue showed teams that did not qualify.

The 1986 World Cup.

The twenty four qualifiers were as follows - Algeria (402) Argentina (457), Belgium (499), Brazil (410), Bulgaria (152), Canada (214), Denmark (636), England (569), France (571), Hungary (635), Italy (415), Mexico (610), Morocco (481), Northern Ireland (393), Paraguay (634), Poland (412), Portugal (531), Scotland (614), South Korea (214), Spain (48 although 433 would make more sense), Iraq (21)*, USSR (392), Uruguay (397) and West Germany (445)

The six non-qualifiers in the catalogue were Australia (028), Austria (453), Holland (416), Ireland (471), Peru (455) and Wales (573)

The 1990 World Cup.

Along with new England home and away strips (719 and 720), a new Romania (718), and a USA (717) , there were four new entrants to the Subbuteo World Cup family. There were no new boxes this time, but the squad boxes were used again with only an Italia 90 sticker to tell them apart from the 1986 versions.

The two catalogues that cover the Italia 90 World Cup don't actually list the teams available. The 1990 catalogue had two pages of national sides that looked reasonable, but there were several qualifiers missing, and eight teams shown who were not at the finals. It also showed some away kits, which I've included.

The qualifiers, and their reference numbers of that year seem to be - Argentina (457), Austria (453), Belgium (649), Brazil (410), Cameroon (403)*, Columbia (713), Costa Rica (714), Czechoslovakia (231), Egypt (716), England (home 653, away 682),  Holland (689) Italy (home 415, away 443), Rep. Ireland (699), Romania (718), Scotland (home 680, away 710), South Korea (214), Soviet Union (696), Spain (433), Sweden (316), United Arab Emirates (715) USA (717), Uruguay (397), West Germany (home 681, away 393), and Yugoslavia (149).

The pre-tournament Parodi full price list of 1990 lists all the teams in the proper groups, with reference numbers, and all 24 are advised as available as P100-66000 with the box shown as the 66000 one with Italia 90 sticker. No away kits are in this Italian list. The list is (for once) in number order. The Italian list is identical to the one shown above, except that they still have Austria listed as reference 10. The same list has P100 teams, but all the qualifiers have been removed from this one, leaving just fourteen national sides that did not qualify (all of which were probably unsold stock from previous lists....)

*Cameroon don't appear in the UK catalogues for 1989 and 1990, but do reappear in 1991.

Here is a summary of all the National teams mentioned in P100 and 63000 boxes.

*These teams are shown in the 1986 catalogue, but did not qualify for the 1986 World Cup.

Even this big list isn't the complete story. A quick look on ebay found a reference one with a named "Malta" box. Malta was a big market for Subbuteo, but they were never likely to be qualifying for a World Cup.
